Dear Congress participants, you will have an opportunity to hear and see the live concert, which will be held during the Congress Opening Ceremony. We invite you to attend in the concert of one of the most famous musical groups of people with intellectual disabilities – the COLOUR ORCHESTRA of VSA Lithuania “Guboja”, which is a part of the National „Colour Music“ Orchestra.
Ever since its establishment, the very special arts association (VSA) of Lithuania „Guboja“ has been supporting and fostering creative abilities of disabled people through music and other artistic activities. A significant progress in music-related activities took place in 1995 when VSA Lithuania „Guboja” started to apply „colour methodology“, which had been developed in Holland. The main concept of this methodology is that music notes and their equivalents on musical instruments are marked in pre-agreed colours. This approach fosters musical perception of the disabled and makes it easier to teach them to play various musical instruments.
In 1998, the head of VSA Lithuania „Guboja“ Viktorija Vitaitė initiated creation of the National „Colour Music“ Orchestra, which was created out of regional groups. Romualdas Brūzga was appointed as artistic director and chief conductor of the orchestra. The orchestra’s workshops, summer camps, festivals and concerts started to be held in 1999. Since then, the orchestra has given a large number of concerts not only in Lithuania (the Presidency of the Republic of Lithuania, the Parliament of the Republic of Lithuania, during The Days of the Capital, Alytus City Festival, Sea Feast, etc.) but also abroad (in Holland, Germany, Belgium, Poland, Hungary, Latvia, Russia).
The orchestra has also initiated implementation of joint programs to be carried out together with music professionals and healthy peer groups. In 2008, VSA Lithuania „Guboja“ project The National „Colour Music“ Orchestra became the winner of the national contest „Handinnov Europe 2008“ in France; the award was granted for a new concept and its impact on integration of young people with disabilities into society life.
Currently, the core of the orchestra consists of 50 mentally retarded people (from 18 to 40 years old) coming from different cities of Lithuania. All of them are members of regional „Colour Music“ groups. Sole people with vision, physical, complex or other disabilities can also be the members of the orchestra. “Musical Kaleidoscope“ is the first album of the National „Colour Music“ Orchestra released in CD format. It was dedicated to the 20th anniversary of The Very Special Arts Association of Lithuania „Guboja“. Versatile activities of the orchestra motivate its members to participate in the process of collective creation, to find allies in the home country and abroad and to feel themselves as complete members of community and society.
